During World War II, Australia supported the Soviet Union in the fight against fascism. In July 1941, the famous Australian social activist Julia Street organized campaign to help the USSR and the Committee of medical aid to Russia. The Committee announced fundraising to help the Soviet Union. Due to funds raised, food, medicines, wool, felt and leather were delivered to the USSR. Just one example: Port Campbell dockworkers in November, 1941 spent all their salary to the purchase of sheepskin for the USSR. This year, on the 75th anniversary of the Victory, a memorial plaque was unveiled in Russian city of Samara, in the building where the first Australian Embassy in the USSR was located.
